UCONN 2000 has facilitated impressive results at the main campus in Storrs, while enhancing education and research facilities at our five regional campuses, and at our School of Law. The benefits extend throughout the University, encompassing our Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine. While undertaking an endeavor that The New York Times has called, "a building boom that would be the envy of most university presidents," we have maintained an enviable record of performance, quality, and accountability in the construction program. UCONN 2000 has been the cornerstone in an ambitious strategic plan, developed by the University's Board of Trustees, to guide the University into the top ranks of public higher education nationally. The Board's plan has helped the University sharpen its academic focus, expand its research and service, enrich the quality of student life, and recruit outstanding scholars to complement an already strong faculty. The Board's vision of institutional renewal set the context and direction for UCONN 2000. Its expectation for the University, coupled with the legislature's foresight, has resulted in the construction of some of this country's finest lecture halls, research labs, and residential and recreational facilities. But much remains to be done before the University fully realizes its potential and joins the ranks of the top public research universities in the United States. The remarkable transformation that is occurring at the University of Connecticut is both a legacy and a promise of what our state can accomplish when its leadership comes together to plan and build Connecticut's future. |
