Action Item 4.1i: Create an atmosphere that welcomes non-traditional and commuter students.

Form a committee that examines the particular experiences and needs of non-traditional and commuting students and makes appropriate recommendations. Membership should include student affairs, academic affairs, students, faculty and staff.

Student Affairs Ongoing Division of Student Affairs establishes specific committees to review concerns student groups as need arises. Have created commuter lounge in Student Union and older student floor in residences. Work with student gov't (commuter representatives involved), student organizations and Multicultural Centers and Institutes ongoing. Master Plan will address Student Union expansion.

The Provost with the advice of the deans, Teaching Institute, Honors Director and Undergraduate Center will establish a lecture series with about four lectures per year.

The Office of Enrollment Management in conjunction with the Deans will establish faculty/student review teams to award merit scholarships in accordance with the specified criteria.

Action Item 4.2b: Develop mechanisms that involve faculty, students and alumni in recruiting and follow-up.

The Enrollment Management Office will identify current programs and develop mechanisms to significantly expand faculty, student and alumni involvement.

The Provost's office will work with the deans to identify and recognize significant scholarly and research accomplishments on a regular basis. All Vice Presidents should enhance or create opportunities to identify and recognize significant accomplishments of all employees.

University Relations will develop a strategy for continued and effective internal communications, will maintain a current calendar of campus activities and will support the dispersal of information. Coordination of efforts should include Student Affairs and the various cultural centers.

Action Item 4.3b: Modify the structure of academic scheduling to facilitate University-wide activities.

The Provost will initiate a study to identify alternative approaches to class scheduling which enhance learning, more fully utilize classrooms, and specify common time blocks for University-wide events including the regional campuses.

Action Item 4.3c: Strengthen and expand the Office of Volunteerism.

Identify current staffing and programs of the Office of Volunteerism and, in conjunction with Items 4.1d and 4.3d, define future objectives with corresponding staff support.

President Ongoing Programs began 1995; Fall 1995 became Center for Community Outreach, reporting to Student Affairs; budget for office in place; seven student workers hired for clerical/outreach activities and program consideration; database developed of over 300 organizations; office coordinates community service projects with community organizations seeking volunteer assistance, students seeking service experience, faculty implementing service learning components of curriculum and seeking field placements for students; service activities run the gamut but with a heavy emphasis (per student demand) on working with youth (10 after-school tutoring programs and 6 mentoring programs are underway.
Action Item 4.3d: Coordinate activities of offices that facilitate student contact with external constituencies.

Identify the various offices that facilitate student contact and consolidate or build coordination mechanisms that assure a unified approach.

Action Item 4.4a: The Office of Multicultural Affairs working with the University Senate will explore curricular opportunities that guide students to think critically about all forms of intercultural relationships.

Add this item to the charge to the committee formed in Item 1.2b. Based on this deliberation and those of Item 1.2d, the Multicultural Affairs Officer should bring appropriate recommendations to the Senate and the Schools.

Action Item 4.4b: The President will ensure a continued dialog throughout the University on diversity issues.
